PERSONALITY: Sorey is someone who grew up with the seraphim instead of humans, were able to shelter him from the conflict and darkness of the world. When he leaves to follow his dreams and explore the world, Sorey is able to stay pure due to his positive outlooks. These traits prove to be vital after he becomes the Shepherd – the Shepherd, who is someone who must not be tainted with malevolence in any way in order to cleanse the world of darkness.
Secluded from the world outside of humans, Sorey is someone who is optimistic, laid-back, pure-hearted, and kind. He always looks on the bright side of any situation. For example, when others comment about a town that is currently suffering a great amount of malevolence, Sorey comments “it might be gloomy now, but the flowers around here will bloom once again.” It's thanks to his positive attitude and bright demeanor that Sorey never stays sad or negative for far too long. He's kind because he goes out of his way to help others, no matter what. It is his gentle attitude and attentiveness towards those around him that also makes him a generous person.
Easily able to adapt into the majority of situations he finds himself in, Sorey is able to become accustomed to his new role as the Shepherd and the changes that happen to his body quickly. Through becoming the Shepherd, Sorey also shows confidence that he can someday fulfill one of his dreams where seraphim and humans can coexist.
Frequently showing how he's memorized lines from the Shepherd's Tale, or expressing how he's read the Celestial Record again and again, it's evident that he shows devotion to the things he's passionate about. Sorey will often recite writings from the Celestial Record out loud, showing that he’s even memorized the book. It is his devotion to his goals and dreams of a world where seraphim and humans can coexist that also helps to keep him optimistic and determined throughout his journey.
Having read many books throughout most of his life, Sorey is very intelligent. He is often able to figure out complex puzzles and think outside of the box in some situations. Naturally inquisitive and excitable, Sorey has great interest in books about history and legends especially. We often see Sorey become enthused about seeing various historic landmarks: rambling on about when they were built, why they were built, and so on. It's his love of the world's legends that partly motivates him to become the Shepherd, along with Sorey's devotion to the things he loves that not only affects himself, but the bonds he has with others around him. Sorey's bond with Mikleo, for example, is strengthened by their love of history. Oftentimes, if he finds an old artifact, he especially ends up getting lost or distracted from anything else, stopping to speak about what they had found with Mikleo especially. When exploring ruins, he can even easily become excited just by being within one. As he says, "there is joy in exploring ruins because you can start to imagine what happened in the past.".
Not only enthused by ruins and history - Sorey shows a great deal of excitement in general for witnessing new sights. Whether it is simply seeing a dog or a city for the first time, Sorey finds himself enthralled with the world around him. When walking around large areas in game, or old ruins, Sorey often cuts in with an excited remark, or even admits how impressed he is.
Thanks to how observant he is, he is able to determine why different building were built, or the reason for different situations such as other’s goals or reasons behind what they are doing. In many cases, Sorey has been able to figure out what others may be thinking without having to ask them. For example, learning about what others want him to do in the different trials that he had to participate in as the Shepherd. Sorey was able to break the situation down and determine what the different seraphim wanted him to do. Through that, he was able to pass said trials. He also realized when Heldalf was toying around with him, even though Heldalf's words were not straight-forward.
It is worth mentioning that there are times when he can come off as naive. His lack of experience with humans and the outside world in general makes him both overly trusting and nearly clueless at times. It is Lailah and Mikleo who often have to help him by advising him on many different things -- whether it is about the world around him, or different situations they find themselves in with him. Sorey is quick to trust others, even without knowing them for very long. An example of this can be shown in the very beginning: Sorey brings Alisha, who is a stranger, to his village. Despite the fact that his guardian had warned him not to bring humans into the village, he did so anyways without even knowing what her motives may be, or if she was a malicious person. As consequence for his actions a hellion who was after her had entered into their home, and one of the villagers was eaten. Having been used to only living with the seraphim, Sorey did not know how potentially dangerous she could have been.
As a result of many of Sorey’s actions, though, it is not only Mikleo and Lailah who can feel uneasy due to Sorey’s ignorant attitude, but the rest of his friends. In Marlind, upon finding a suspicious person with antique books, Sorey believed her quickly when she commented that she was going to protect the books. She seemed to make up multiple excuses about what she wanted to do with the books, and appeared to be in a hurry to flee from the group. It was because of her hasty behavior his friends became uneasy. If not for that slight uneasiness, the woman would have sold the books. It's his lack of experience that can sometimes make him unsure about how to approach situations, or can sometimes make him approach them in wrong ways. Although Sorey is fairly book smart, he is not street smart.
His sheltered upbringing has also been the cause for a more idealistic trait. His sometimes radical attitude towards different things can make him appear almost sanctimonious; Sorey showing a great amount of disbelief for others doing what he doesn't understand, or things that he views as wrong. In exchange, others have to explain to him why things are the way they are. If there is something that Sorey does not believe is right or just, he will state his thoughts out loud. When placed on the battlefield during a war, Sorey reacted rather badly to soldiers doing their job, stating his disbelief in what they were doing. It is also Lailah that states again and again that Sorey must not use his powers to help each individual that comes his way, because they will want to use the Shepherd for their own goals. Unfortunately, his ideals can create more trouble, rather than good, for this reason at times. His unrealistic ideals are often recognized as such, and are sometimes called out on by his friends or strangers, such as Edna showing disbelief to his dream for seraphim and humans coexisting.
Sorey is also very reckless. He is the kind of person to wave off any dangers that come to him, just because they somehow work out. At one point, after hearing about a war, he is prepared to enter into it without little hesitation. At another, Sorey is willing to be looked at as a monster if it means achieving his goals as the Shepherd. It's an implied rule that the Shepherd must not display his powers for other humans to see. However, Sorey is given the choice to do so anyways. In Edna’s words, “people will not react well to things they do not understand.” Lailah comments that people will not understand Sorey’s powers, and it is shown through others that see it that they see Sorey as nothing more than a monster for doing so. His carelessness, much like his other faults, is the cause of concern for others, and causes for some of his comrades to feel as though they must be a guide for him, along with being the voice of reason.
Sorey's recklessness also leads to another point: he sometimes shows little care for his own well-being. He takes on more than what he can handle, even if it means that he will become gravely injured or his body will deteriorate because of his own actions. This shows especially when Sorey and the others were faced against the Lord of Calamity himself. The Lord of Calamity, who was powerful enough to cause the world to be shrouded in malevolence. Despite Lailah's warnings that Sorey was no strong enough to face him, Sorey simply said that they could run away if needed, and went against him anyways. In turn, this ended rather badly for Sorey, and he had nearly died.
Though, it is not only his recklessness that has caused him to create some ill choices, but his impulsiveness. Sorey sometimes makes decisions without thinking them through, or allows his emotions to guide him instantly, rather than his head. Sorey is someone who thinks in the moment, not exactly for how it will affect him in the very near future The time when he learns about the broken bridge leading to Marlind is an example of this. Sorey wanted to fix the bridge right away in front of many people. If not for Lailah, people would have been frightened by seeing the powers he would have used to fix said bridge. . It is not strange for Sorey to rush into situations where he can be in over his head; his sometimes idealistic nature causes him to take on situations where realistically, he cannot handle them. When provoked by Heldalf upon confronting him a second time, Sorey not only put himself in danger, but Rose was nearly killed. Without thinking things through, his decisions can seem almost clumsy, and inconsiderate towards both himself and others. He does not always think about the consequences at hand, and almost acts in an impatient manner at times. This also shows that, if provoked, Sorey can also charge into a situation quickly with a hot-head.
Sorey is the type of person who thinks that he must carry all burdens on his own. He will not hesitate to keep something to himself even if it's harming him. When Sorey's body is burdened with the bond he holds with Alisha as the Shepherd's Squire, he keeps it to himself. Thanks this bond, Sorey was half-blind. Even when Mikleo approaches him about the situation, Sorey merely apologizes for keeping it a secret from him, and does not ask for help, nor attempts to do anything to correct the problem. Mikleo, especially, has shown to keep an extra watchful eye on Sorey because of this, and even has commented that “Sorey tends to take on more than he can handle.” Sorey sees nothing wrong with acting in this way, despite the fact that his self-destructiveness can have many negative consequences. Sorey is not only self-destructive physically, but emotionally. He has a habit of keeping any negative emotions bottled up. Even when something tragic occurs, he frequently keeps his thoughts and emotions to himself.
This shows a more self-destructive aspect of Sorey's personality. There are several times in canon where he is hurt as a result of his own actions, endangering his well-being. This, in turn, often leads to a great amount of guilt and concern for others. This aspect of his personality has even endangered the lives of his friends. As said, he had lost half of his eyesight due to his carelessness at one point. Sorey did not see an enemy strike at Alisha and Mikleo. In turn, the both of them nearly died.
As someone who rarely gives up, he is also stubborn. If Sorey believes what he is doing is right, he will often stick with his decision. Whether it is holding Mikleo back from fighting, or refusing to solve a problem by a way that is already known - Sorey remains firm. Even if others advise him against his decisions, there are times when Sorey will not waver in his choices.
His stubbornness brings us to another point: Sorey can be single-minded. His stubbornness and determination to get something done often leaves him too focused. This is something that has been even a part of his childhood: Sorey often focused on reading books with his full attention, without being distracted. He would even forget to eat or take care of himself for hours on end, Mikleo being the one who fed him. Another example can be shown shortly after he recovers from fighting Heldalf. He was quick to want to go back to the battlefield, despite others telling him that it was a bad idea. If he had gone into the battlefield, it was said that he would have been corrupted with impurities, which would have resulted in the world itself becoming engulfed in malevolence. Despite eventually relenting to their reasoning, he stubbornly did not listen to his friend's concern for the situation at first.
It is important to mention the person closest to him – namely, Mikleo. Mikleo is introduced as someone who is a childhood friend to Sorey. If Sorey is the one who is emotional and reckless, Mikleo is the one who is calm and collected. Having been raised alongside one another since infancy, it is safe to say that the two share an unbreakable bond. They share a playful rivalry; sometimes debating over things such as historical ruins and landmarks. It’s through Mikleo that we see a teasingly playful side of Sorey. The two tease each other frequently. However, Sorey can sometimes become rather irritated at some of Mikleo’s jabs. This can be because Mikleo can tease Sorey almost rudely at times, or even brag a little upon beating Sorey when they share a competition of sorts.
It is not only Mikleo whom Sorey has a close bond with, but Alisha. Even though Sorey is aware of her strength, he would do anything to protect her--even at the potential cost of his own life. Although the two often part ways, their bond only grows stronger throughout Zestiria's storyline. "Alisha the Smiling" is a name that Sorey gives to Alisha, because he wishes to always see her smiling.
Through Alisha, we can also see how important others' goals and dreams are to him. He aids Alisha in order to restore her hometown back to a pure state, and allows her to make a contract with Lailah in order to help her achieve her goals. Not only that, but Mikleo's fight with Sorey ended because Mikleo expressed that Sorey's dream was Mikleo's, as well. As a result of this, Sorey agreed that Mikleo should fight beside him. Sorey is someone who considers not only his own passions, but fights for other's goals, as well. This is because he can understand how important and motivating goals can be towards people, and how strongly others will fight for them.
Sorey is not pushy or demanding at all towards others. While he does make requests or motivates his comrades to continue on, in the end his friends are travelling with him by choice. It is also shown that Sorey holds a great amount of kindness, respect, and sincerity. Sorey shows politeness when addressing strangers, and respects other's boundaries. For example, Lailah's is someone who is not able to tell Sorey a great amount of answers that he is seeking. Sorey, being Lailah's friend and comrade, does not push her to tell him what she cannot say. This also shows the amount of trust that Sorey has in his friends; even if Lailah cannot give Sorey the information that he needs, he is not the least bit nervous or suspicious of Lailah. In many cases, his friends do not need to tell Sorey that they support him and his choices -- he believes in them, and has confidence in their help both in and out of battles. Sorey trusts his friends with his life.
Unsurprisingly, Sorey shows a great dislike for killing others in general. As Rose says at one point, "Sorey's job is to give life, not kill." This is even shown through his weapon. He uses a ceremonial sword, because he does not want to harm others.
COURT ALLIANCE & REASONING: ( Diamond Coterie. ) This court not only ties in with Sorey’s love of history, but his value of others and his dreams. Throughout Zestiria’s storyline, Sorey frequently shows his love for history and bringing back what was once an ancient time where seraphim and humans coexisted. Though, this also goes hand-in-hand with the fact that Sorey values his relationship with the seraphim and the fact that he can communicate with them. As the Shepherd, it is also safe to say that he is guided by a bigger purpose. The Shepherd is the one who will guide the world out of the darkness and back into a more purified state. His love of history, along with the fact that one of his goals is to complete his quest as the Shepherd, makes him fit for this court.
ABILITIES:
• PHYSICAL STRENGTH: As said in the personality section, Sorey uses a ceremonial sword to fight. Through the battle system in the game, we can see that Sorey is skilled with the sword, can move quickly, dodge, defend, and jump. He is a fighter whom still has a great amount of potential to grow even stronger through experience.
• SPIRTUAL RESONANCE: Sorey can see and communicate with the seraphim. Normal humans cannot do either. This is due to growing up amongst the seraphim.
• ARMATIZATION: His "magical" abilities lie within his ability as a Shepherd. Through making a contract with Lailah, a Seraph, Sorey can merge with other Seraphs whom decide to make a contract with Lailah. Through this, Sorey changes in appearance. If the Seraph he merges with is of fire element, he can use fire magic. If they use water magic, he can also use water magic. The list goes on for both wind and earth magic, as well. Though, this isn't merely magic such as using a water spell or earth spell. As the Shepherd, we see him moving rocks, raising the earth, or putting out fires with water magic. Of course, these abilities are limited through whatever the Seraph he merges with is limited to. Normally, people cannot see the changes in appearance, or the Seraph in question. Seraphs are invisible towards normal humans.
This does not end on using different elements depending on what Seraph Sorey is merged with. The weapon he uses changes in game, too. Through combing with a Water Seraph, Sorey uses a bow and arrow. Through Earth Seraph, Sorey uses his fists. Through Fire Seraph, Sorey uses a much longer, and bigger sword. Last but not least, through Wind, Sorey has "wings" that help him release gusts of wind. Through all of these different Seraphs, Sorey is able to heal himself, as well.
NOTE: These abilities and contracts can only be made through Lailah, whom first contracted with Sorey when he decided to take on the role of the Shepherd.
• SQUIRE: However, the contracts Sorey decides to make through Lailah are not limited to Seraphs, but humans as well. Through making contracts with humans, he can take them on as a "Squire”. These contracts can also grant other people the power to merge with other Seraphs. However, there is a cost to this if the other person in question does not have the same spiritual resonance as Sorey does. For example, when Alisha had decided to become the Shepherd's disciple for a short amount of time, Sorey went blind in one eye. This was due to the fact that Alisha did not possess any ability to communicate or see Seraphs. Through making a contract with Sorey, she was able to communicate with the Seraphs like Sorey can. On another hand, when Rose (another human) became his companion, he was not burdened as he as with Alisha. This is because beforehand, Rose had the potential to communicate and see other Seraphs.
• SERAPHIM VESSEL: It should also be noted the Sorey “hosts” Seraphs within his body as a vessel thanks to being the Shepherd. Through this, he can hear whatever Seraphs he’s contracted with talk, and even converse with one another.
INVENTORY: The clothes on his back, his ceremonial sword, and the Celestial Records.
